This Smile

This Smile
This smile I have
breaks corners of my mouth
flows up from heart
bubbles through my veins
every inch of me in joy
and this smile shines
at the thought of you
at the thoughts of what we do
a sensual wave across
every nerve ending
and love's ecstasy peaks
in this smile perfect
this smile just for you
this smile made brighter
by the one you wear too.

I hear in your words your sense of loss, and yet it must have been great to have that person there, to share your pain at the time, and....in a way, to make you able to handle the pain of their loss later. In remembering laughter and smiles, what better memories could there be to hold of those not here.

Dear Mulleen,
Thank you for this subject. I have written many a poem about smiling. I just pulled up a bunch of mine on FB. I was reading one and came across a comment from a friend of mine that passed away. Oh dear it makes me sad but also ties me to the past and present. I so valued the humanity of this person who passed away. I want to think him someone's guardian angel somewhere. The poem he commented on was about my Mother's Legacy which was about my sadness of her dying but also recalling how she could be silly and how we should not take things too seriously. My friend wrote "Life without laughter would not be good. It's still isn't known why we laugh. That's funny isn't it?" He really had a way of being deep and serious but with humor. He was a whiz at satire. Your poem prompted this inquiry of mine into my smile poems and hence my precious thought of a friend who passed. It is sad but also like a hug. I know you Mulleen can appreciate depths of feeling especially compassion and empathy.

Very sweet and simple. Smiling can also be contagious.

sometimes a smile
is more than a smile
it has secrets deep
as if dreams hidden in our sleep
those desires which leap
fully formed to our lips
in a smiling kiss.
